A virtual curtain falls, revealing a sea of trees: Welcome to the forest! Here you meet characters from the life of Fritz Wortelmann, founder of the German Institute for Puppetry: from his own hand puppet theatre to the propaganda puppet theatre of the Nazi era and the artistically designed hand puppets of Lore Lafin, who was far ahead of her time in her love of experimentation. The route leads from nature to the city, under a starry sky, through an Indonesian bazaar and into sacred rooms in the Far East.
In the last room, visitors enter the research centre of the German Forum for Puppet Theatre and Puppetry Art in Bochum, where they encounter the spectacular shadow puppets by Australian artist Richard Bradshaw or the knight from the Sicilian Opera dei Pupi before returning to the real world.
In 1948, Fritz Wortelmann from Bochum began to build up an extensive collection of puppet theatre. Today, the collection named after him can be experienced in an extraordinary way. Equipped with VR glasses, visitors go on a virtual journey through the international history of puppet theatre. The travelling companion is Fritz Wortelmann, who guides them through the exhibition as an animated figure.
Visitors can move freely around the exhibition and decide for themselves which thematic depth they want to explore.

Festival shop at the Rindermarkt
Ruffinihaus
15.10. - 27.10. | For all | Free admission | Detailed programme from the end of September
Wonder. Shop
Have you ever looked at the world from the perspective of a megaphone?
Directly on the Rindermarkt, very close to Marienplatz, there is a shop this year where there is nothing to buy, but instead a lot to admire and experience. 38 things represent 38 theatre pieces that want to be marvelled at, questioned and discovered: What would a world look like in which our fish from ‘The Fisherman and His Wife’ would rule? What story would an AI invent in which polystyrene plays the leading role, as in ‘Materia’?
We also invite you to play: At our festival aperitifs, get in the mood for the play with other visitors over a drink, for example by warming up all your senses or trying to feel like a puppet yourself. Or you can come along to participate creatively and fill your own headspace, while metre-long ‘headspaces’ take up space outside the door.
Finissage breakfast: Sunday 27.10. | 11.00 a.m.
