Big stage. Small stage. Figures so big that several children have to work together to move them and so small that the whole theatre fits into a matchbox. We build stage sets and moving figures out of cardboard, wood, wire, junk and whatever else we can get our hands on, breathe life into them and let them experience things we have always dreamed of. Because there are no limits on stage. They can fly and perform magic, overcome abysses or start all over again. We experiment with materials, spaces, proportions and light, creating improvised scenes and images that can serve as an introduction to telling longer stories.
The programme will continue until the end of February 2025, supplemented by two further puppet theatre guest performances. More information will follow.

Children and young people who are keen to experiment and enjoy puppet theatre can take a look behind the scenes. Inspired by the performances of theatre professionals, they can implement their own ideas as puppeteers, directors, set designers or dramaturges. A wide range of material invites them to build all kinds of figures, masks, miniature stages or objects. And then it's just a case of overcoming stage fright and standing in the spotlight for once!

Itim Ensemble - Workshop „Puppet Cinema”
14+ | for school classes
In 2009, Zvi Sahar began developing PuppetCinema, a theatre performance that combines cinema and puppet theatre with closed-circuit video. It is a theatre language in which the audience of the performance simultaneously watches the puppet film projected onto the screen and the process of its creation on stage. At the centre of the work is the placement of a miniature figure in an unfamiliar environment, whereby the photographed image is charged with subtext and the tension between figure and material.
Inspired by the performance ‘Step’ at the Schauburg, members of the ensemble and director Zvi Sahar will conduct a workshop with pupils and give an introduction to the PuppetCinema technique and the basics of camera use such as focus and depth of field, perspectives, light and shadow, composition, etc., and above all - how a picture can tell a story.
Working groups of 5 to 6 students will create scenes of miniature figures in the larger realistic world, which will be photographed and also filmed. Attention is paid to the tension between a figure and its surroundings. Starting with one figure, then three, the focus is also on composition and drama.
The workshop is sponsored by Stiftung Jugendaustausch Bayern

Newspaper that turns into a person who runs, flies or even looks as if he feels? Yes, that's possible. The newspaper is moulded in short steps into body parts and put together. With this new creature, we experience how material can be animated - i.e. brought to life - and used to tell simple and imaginative stories. We work in small groups and at the end the works are presented in a small group.
Julia Giesbert studied communication sciences in Berlin and Barcelona and contemporary puppetry at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. She works as a freelance puppeteer and actress for film, television, theatre and opera productions and realises her own projects together with Peter Lutz as Giesbert&Lutz (most recently ‘Die tapfere Schneiderin’ for people aged 5 and over).
